Why Do Most Contractors FAIL On Social Media?

Hey there guys, Reggie here once again from The Contractor Social Media Guru with another DIY Contractor Marketing blog. Today we’re going to be taking a look at a question a very close friend of mine who works in the contractor marketing space asked me recently. That question is “Why do contractors fail on social media.”

Now before you leave, NO we’re not going to be talking to consistency today or video content. Instead I thought we’d take a look at a few things that go a little deeper than just those two factors.

Without wasting any further time, let's dive right in.

  1. You're copying other content creators in the contractor space.

Before we go into detail I want to point out that I understand how hard it can be to come up with original ideas for content for a contractor business. Besides the fact that it’s difficult to come up with new ideas, most contractors simply don’t have time to record video & create branded content for their various social media channels.

While it may be easy to “mirror” other content you’ve found, it may not always help your business stand out in an already saturated market. Taking the time to create content that is unique pays off in the long run because it gives viewers something new to learn about & consume. We’ve all seen how quickly Tik Tok trends can become annoying or how a copycat reel loses its impact the 2nd time around. The same applies to the content you create for your contractor business.

Creating content that answers questions & solves the problems of your prospects puts you in a position of authority over your local competitors. Be bold and take the bull by the horns!

Here’s our list of “The Perfect Times To Create Content As A Contractor.”

  • While you’re having your morning coffee

  • While you’re in the bathroom ( We’re kidding😂)

  • On your way to work ( Use a mount for your phone )

  • In the office at your desk

  • On your way an inspection

  • During an inspection

  • On your way back from an inspection

  • During lunch

  • When you’re buying supplies

  • On your way home from work

  1. You’re not utilizing all the tools social media provides as a contractor.

Contractor businesses FAIL to perform well on social media, despite the wide range of tools available to them on platforms like Instagram, Facebook & Google My Business. One of the main reasons for this is that they are not taking full advantage of all the features offered by these platforms.

For example, many contractors fail to utilize Reels on Instagram, which is a feature that allows users to create short, edited videos. Similarly, they may not take advantage of the analytics tools that are available, which can provide valuable insights into how their posts are performing and help them to make data-driven decisions about their content strategy.

Additionally, many contractors also fail to use Instagram and Facebook Stories, which can be an effective way to connect with potential customers and build a loyal following.

By not using all of these features, contractor businesses are missing out on a powerful set of tools that could help them to boost their reach and engagement on social media, and ultimately grow their business.

  1. You’re focusing on the wrong platforms to market your contractor business.

The sad truth about Instagram, Facebook & YouTube is that you're more than likely fighting a losing battle trying to generate organic leads on these platforms. This is because they’re after your money. If you’re not running ads then the chances are you’re not getting leads on any of these platforms.

What I’m trying to say is focus your efforts on Google. I am not saying don’t mirror your content to Facebook & Instagram but what I am saying is focus on creating content for Google My Business before you focus your efforts on other platforms.

Google My Business is different in the sense that the algorithm tends to work with you & not against you when posting organic content. This is great news for contractors because it means FREE leads.

  1. Your content lacks the authenticity home & property owners connect with.

Something I talk about a lot is the level of authenticity it takes to connect with homeowners as a contractor on social media. The truth is it’s really difficult & not a lot of contractors get it right straight off the bat.

When creating content, whether it be video or branded content, you always need to ask yourself if you’re really trying to help & educate or whether you’re trying to sell. The truth is home & property owners can tell & nobody likes being sold too.

Educational content that radiates passion & expertise is where the real gold is at. Finding a passion for your niche & what you do is crucial to creating content that serves a purpose. Creating content for the sake of creating content waters down your brand & its authority.

  1. You aren’t doing your research.

Taking your content to the next level is literally as simple as doing a tiny bit of research on platforms like YouTube, TikTok,  various community forums & blogs. There are countless video & text based resources exactly like our blog right here dedicated to educating contractor type business owners on how to manage their own digital presences from Social media to SEO & everything in between.

My closing 2c on the matter…..

I really think that 2023 is going to be the year that a lot of contractors pull their socks up with regards to their social media & how they go about things in space. Things are about to get hot in the kitchen and not showing up is 100% not an option at this point. Falling off the bandwagon now as a contractor business could prove a mess should you attempt to make a strong comeback later on in the year.

My advice? Don’t pull on now, keep pushing, keep innovating & don’t stop until you find a method that works for your business. You’ll thank me in 2024, trust me!

P.S, I really love connecting with contractors to talk about their social media & I’d love to talk to you if you’re looking for any advice or direction.
