5 Cringy Things Roofing Companies Do On Social Media
Hey there guys! Reggie here from The Contractor Social Media Guru once again with another blog entry dedicated to helping contractors dominate their social media efforts. Today we're going to take a look at the top 5 cringiest things that roofing contractors do on social media.
I'm writing this today not to point fingers or insult anyone but to help give perspective into how prospects might perceive certain things they see on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram & Google My Business.
Not only will we be covering the cringy habits but also alternatives you can try to appeal to prospects in a smarter way. Let's not waste any time further & dive right in!
1. Using the term "#1 Roofing Contractor In ........." in your page/profile title.
I thought I'd start with something that I've been seeing way to much of lately. Let me start of by saying that if you're going to make a claim this big you better have the numbers to back it!
The truth about this is that firstly, it doesn't work & secondly, it simply isn't true 99% of the time. Not only do you know this, but your prospects do too and so do your competition.
In recent weeks 100's of contractor business profiles have been removed from Google due to using terms like this in their title. Google's reasoning behind the removal being false advertising.
What should contractors do alternatively?
As apposed to using outdated methods of getting people to notice your business you can try including keywords & phrases related to the services your business offer.
Not only is this a lot more honest but it also helps potential prospects find you when searching for your services. Here an example, "On The Mark Roofing - Roofing & Guttering Contractor".
2. We offer free roof inspections. ( Use better terminology. )
Before you loose your mind and say, "Reggie, ARE YOU CRAZY?", let me explain. I'm definitely not telling you not to advertise the fact that your company offers inspections at zero charge. What I am telling you is that terminology is fundamentally important when it comes to marketing this service.
I want you to think about the term "Inspection" for a quick moment. An inspection is usually something that is done to discover flaw, error or problems. The truth here lies in the fact that most people don't like being told something is wrong.
We recommend a totally different approach to this.
What should contractors do alternatively?
Try using terminology such as "roof report" or "roof evaluation" instead to keep to emotion connected to the experience positive. You can motive homeowners to book this inspection by pointing out that most homeowners are actually unaware of the damages on their roof till you've been up to do the report.
You can motivate your case by adding on that you helped multiple other homeowners in the area get new roofs through insurance with the same exact process.
3. Posting low quality video & photo content of your work.
Have you ever seen content of such pool quality that you think the image or video is still trying to render? 7/10 Contractors I've connected with over the past year are guilty of doing this at least once in the past 365 days on their personal or business social media.
You might think you're doing yourself a favor by uploading your portfolio to social media but the sad reality is YOU'RE BURNING YOUR BRAND! You wouldn't use inferior paint to paint the outside of your house because it will look bad. Apply that same mentality to the way your business looks/appears on social media.
What should contractors do alternatively?
Investing in a camera or phone that has the ability to shoot & record in HD is fundamental if you're looking to win on social media. Owning a proper piece of equipment like this will allow you to properly create content and document your work to upload to social media.
4. Settling for "below standard" branded content.
I'd like to refer back to a blog I recently wrote where we discussed the "$150 Fiverr SMMA" and why the work they do for contractors does more damage to your brand that actual good.
Posting content that is of poor design quality shows prospects that you don't care about how your business looks to the public. If you're company image doesn't matter then it could only leave potential prospects wondering where else you slack within your business.
Having industry standard branded content on your social media helps tie your brand together & creates a strong sense of authority to potential prospects.
What should contractors do alternatively?
This is the part where we come in. As a contractor it's important to find an agency that matches the following criteria:
- Understands your niche
- Is design & quality focused
- Has a proven strategy & results
Making sure your agency meets the above criteria will ensure that your social media efforts are successful.

5. Posting unprofessional/NSFW content on your personal profile.
"Surely this can't be as big of an issue as you're saying it is Reggie?" Let me kick this section of the blog of by saying that last week I spoke to a contractor who lost a deal with an estate because of something he posted on his personal social media ( 30+ Mansion sized homes ).
While you might not be making as many people laugh as you used to, its a small price to pay for professionalism. Keeping your personal profile "tidy" & work related will only do you good in the long run.
Steer clear of anything that might seem opinionated, political, bias or offensive. You'll thank me for this one later.
What should contractors do alternatively?
This is a great opportunity for you to leverage your personal profile to generate some "Word Of Mouth" for your business. You'd be surprised to know how many of your Facebook friends have no idea what you do for a living.
Why not tell them? In my experience I've found that contractors who use their profiles to talk about business generate on average 9% more business than those who don't?
How did I come up with that number? I made it up.😂 'm dead sure you see exactly how this could work in your favor so I wont go into too much detail further.
My 2c on the whole thing?......
