5 Things Contractors Need To Stop Doing On Social Media in 2023

Hello there contractor community, my name is Reggie from The Contractor Social Media Guru & in today’s blog we’re going to be taking a deeper look at the top 5 things contractors should stop doing on Social Media

Before we take a deeper look I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas if you’re celebrating & a happy new year. I know things have been tough for most over the past few months but I firmly believe 2023 is going to be the year of the contractor.

Without wasting time further let's dive right in!

#1 Stop spending $150 on Fiverr to hire a Social Media company that knows nothing about contracting.

“Yes but I can have it done for $150 dollars!” We’ve heard this one quite a few times & rightfully so, I mean who wouldn’t wanna save $100 - $200 a month on marketing right?

The problem with this starts with you signing a contract with a Social Media agency that knows nothing about your niche as a contractor. What you’ve just done is signed yourself up to a 6 month Copy + Paste strategy that probably 10 other contractors in your state have too.

So what's the problem with this?

The problem is you’re missing the whole point of Social Media as business. The whole point of social media is to give your contractor business an opportunity to stand out.

Unfortunately the problems don’t end there. Very often most of the content created is of a very poor quality leaving homeowners to wonder just how “professional” the contractor business is? I mean if they’re not concerned with their digital presence then why would their building or home matter?

Another common issue with the $150 Fiverr agency is the often poor or misguided copy which accompanies your post. Riddled with spelling errors & broken sentences due to lack of spell check & edit.

The reality of Contractor Social Media

The reality of it all is that you want to show up well presented & the truth is that doesn’t happen for $150 dollars. Look for an agency that knows your space & niche. Take a look at examples of their content & copy to ensure you are 100% happy with the quality.

#2 Stop being scared of the camera.

Every single contractor marketing agency right now are talking about “getting behind the camera” but it couldn’t possibly make such a difference right? WRONG! If you’ve been camera shy all this time then you’ve been leaving valuable leads on the table.

As a Contractor you are falling behind & fast if you’re not already creating video content for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok & YouTube. Right now there are 1000’s of contractors all of the USA creating various types of video content from “How To” videos all the way through to content designed to make you laugh & everything in-between.

More exposure for your contractor company

The reason creating video content is so important lies in the fact that is opens up a whole new avenue of exposure for your contractor business. Creating reals & long form content related to your niche not only gives you the opportunity to be found by potential prospects but also creates a platform for you to build authority upon.

What type of content should I be creating as a contractor?

Here’s a list of our favorite content ideas you can try for you’re contractor business in the Social Media space.

  1. How to videos

  2. Insiders view

  3. Office meeting videos

  4. Inspection videos

  5. Selfie videos

  6. Photos with the homeowner

  7. Meet the team photos

  8. Drone Videos

  9. Memes

  10. Testimonial screenshots

  11. Answer FAQs on video

  12. Progress videos & Photos

  13. Timelapses

  14. Shout-outs to other contractors & subs

  15. Business owner selfie posts with core values

  16. Support a cause

  17. Feature previous “masterbuilds”

#3 Stop underestimating the power of your Google My Business listing.

One of the most slept on social media platforms for contractors is your Google My Business listing. If you’re not showing up on Google My Business with an update or offer at least 5 times a week you’re leaving FREE leads on the table!

The best part of Google My Business is its algorithm & how it works with you & not against you to help connect you with potential prospects. What’s important to note is that, just like any social media platforms, Google My Business works best when optimized.

How do I optimize my Google My Business as a contractor?

1. Keywords in your listing name

Now this might sound obvious but using keywords in your listing title actually gives you a better chance of being found on Google by a potential homeowner client.

Here's an example. "Luminarc Exteriors: Roofing & Siding in Ohio"

2. Complete your listing

Giving Google as much information as possible about your business counts in your favor. This means filling in your ENTIRE profile.

Listing your services and completing all other fields will help Google better understand what your business does & in turn help Google connect your business with the people looking for its services.

3. Update your services as they change.

Often during colder months roofing slows down for many contractors. This doesn't always mean that shop is completely closed.

Many roofing companies offer various other services during the colder months to "keep the lights on". Don't forget to update your services on your Google My Business Profile.

4. Primary Category

This might be the most important one on the list! Make sure your primary category is correctly listed as the one you are trying to rank for.

5. Secondary Category

Don't forget to fill in your secondary categories. This will further help Google understand which services your business offers.

#4 Stop being inconsistent with your posting.

Showing up daily, consistently & indefinitely will improve your visibility on social media as a contractor company or any business for that fact. The reason consistency is important is it shows the platform that you are active & therefore relevant to anyone with interest in what you are creating content about.

Now what’s important to note is that consistently does not equal meaninglessly. Be sure to create content that delivers value to your audiences in any way possible. If on that day you can’t think of something that would ad value then think of something funny. The secret sits in entertaining your audience and not filling your social media with what we like to call “Filler Content”

#5  Stop ignoring quality.

Touching back on “The $150” social media agency topic we discussed earlier. Quality of the essence! If that means it takes 2 months to find an agency creating branded content that is up to your standard then so be it. We can’t stress enough how badly “Bad Branding” can impact your contractor company in the long run.

Taking care of your “Brand” in the social media space not only reflects concern for your business overall but also gives off a feeling of elevated status about your brand to prospects which in the long run builds authority around your contractor companies brand.

My Closing Statement On The Matter

With the year drawing to a close many contractors are terminating their marketing efforts for the “off season” to save where possible. While a full on marketing campaign might not make sense during off season we recommend scaling down with your agency to keep your contractor brand fresh in the minds of homeowners.

Don’t lose hope in the quieter months of your year & look into other services to keep the lights on while you’re not able to deliver your higher ticket services to your local service are.

From our side happy holidays & good luck out there!
